Basic Function

Under the direction of an administrator or manager, organizes, coordinates, and oversees the day-to-day operations and activities of the Child Development Center, coordinates communications with District departments and personnel, faculty, parents, and students.

Representative Duties

1. Organizes, coordinates, and oversees the day-to-day operations and activities of the Child Development Center; facilitates a well-balanced, easy-paced program, implementing a wholesome philosophy of Early Childhood Education. E
2. Trains and provides work direction or guidance to Child Development Center staff as assigned; participates in the District committee process for the recruitment and recommendation of the interview and selection of applicants; provides input into the evaluation process of staff to administrator or manager. E
3. Participates in planning and monitoring children’s daily activities in and outside of the classroom; assists in planning, preparing, and setting up instructional centers and materials. E
4. Assists in supervising children individually and as a group; assists teachers with observation and recording of children’s cognitive and physical achievements. E
5. Communicates with parents to promote an interactive and ongoing relationship with parents and families; participates in parent conferences at the discretion of the Director. E
6. Provides regular and ongoing staff development and in-service training programs for Child Development Center personnel. E
7. Conducts regular parent meetings; meets with individual parents as necessary to ensure a positive environment for each child; develops and implements parent education programs. E
8. Compiles information and prepares various reports related to Center operations, such as fiscal, attendance, and nutrition program reports. E
9. Develops and implements a detailed program plan for the children, parents, and laboratory students in cooperation with the Parent Advisory Council and Early Childhood faculty. E
10. Coordinates communications and activities with other District departments and personnel, Child Development Center staff, student assistants, teachers, parents, volunteers, students, and various outside agencies to facilitate and improve Child Development Center operations. E
11. Assists with the planning and preparation of the Child Development Center budget; schedules Center facilities. E
12. Maintains or oversees the maintenance of a variety of records, files, file sharing, and filing systems, including but not limited to student files, attendance records, and employee files. E
13. Maintains and archives a variety of Children’s Center informational materials, such as the parent handbook, brochures, flyers, and applications. E
14. Maintains adequate stock of supplies, materials, and equipment; orders supplies, materials, and equipment as needed. E
15. Provides instruction to children in classrooms as needed. E
16. Performs administrative responsibilities in support of Center activities; prepares correspondence and a variety of other materials; assists in completion of Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) and Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) assessment tool for each enrolled child; may order supplies and teaching materials as needed or directed. E
17. Assists in supervising laboratory students from the College Early Childhood program in the absence of the mentor teacher or as needed. E
18. Trains and provides work direction to student assistants, student workers, and short-term, temporary staff; oversees and coordinates the work of Children’s Center personnel. E
19. Performs a variety of clerical and administrative responsibilities in support of the department’s day-to-day activities and/or operations utilizing a variety of communication modalities including but not limited to answers and responds to phone calls, emails, text messages, and chat platforms; opens, screens, and distributes mail and correspondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment; enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed; follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion of requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance to standard office equipment. E
20. Performs related duties that support the overall objective of the position.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related discipline; AND
• Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory and teaching capacity in a childcare or pre-school program; preferably in a community college child development program;
• Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

License Certificates/Credentials

Director Permit-Child Development Center from the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Desired Qualifications

Master’s degree. Experience with early childcare management and state funded grant programs, grant proposals and accreditation.

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this class. While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic shades and colors and the ability to adjust focus.
Employees are frequently required to walk and stand; subject to stooping, pushing, pulling, bending, carrying, and lifting equipment and children up to 50 pounds.
