Summary of Position

The Early Childhood Teacher, a staff member of the Center for Young Children and Family at Plymouth State University, will work as part of a collaborative teaching team to design engaging learning environments and a play-based, constructivist curriculum that is responsive to children’s emergent interests and needs and demonstrates an anti-bias approach. As an educator, support children in: developing a healthy sense of self in relationships and with people, collaborating and cooperating to solve problems, and engaging in strong and playful physical activity. The teacher will use effective communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrate strength in creating partnerships with children, peers, families and university students. As a supervisor and mentor to university students, they will strive to model best practices in the field and support student learning and use of these practices. They will learn and utilize the Pyramid Model Framework to promote and support social emotional competence and will demonstrate an understanding of and utilize positive approaches to guidance and discipline. They will be expected to demonstrate high professional and ethical standards. This position runs for ten months of the year (late august to mid June). Will perform other related duties and projects as assigned.

Other minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood, Pre-school Education or Elementary Education with at least 6 credits in Early Childhood or Pre-school Education.
  • One year of experience in teaching young children.
  • Must have sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this position, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with and understanding of constructivism, emergent curriculum, and the project approach.
  • Supervisory and/or mentoring experience
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Pyramid Model Framework.
  • Demonstrated record of teacher collaboration
  • Experience building strong family partnerships and facilitating family conversations
  • Proven ability to exercise confidentiality
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Cooperative Nature
  • Organization Skills
  • Willingness to teach any age group 13 months to 5 years
  • CPR and First Aid Certified.
