The College and the District
College of San Mateo (CSM) is part of the San Mateo County Community College District and is a Hispanic Serving Institution and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution. The college enrolls approximately 15,000 students each academic year. CSM has a diverse student population that is a reflection of the communities that it serves. The Position
The Dean of Mathematics and Science reports directly to the Vice President of Instruction for the administration of the division, including the disciplines of Architecture, Astronomy, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Dental Assisting, Engineering, Geological Sciences, Mathematics, Nursing, Physical Sciences, Physics, as well as the Planetarium, Math Resource Center, Integrated Science Center, and MESA.
Duties and Responsibilities

- Provide leadership, management, and development for the division’s day, evening, and weekend programs in the academic year and in the summer
- Oversee hiring of faculty and classified professionals for the division; recommend personnel actions to the appropriate Vice President; supervise and evaluate faculty and classified professionals in accordance with collective bargaining agreements
- Regularly evaluate course offerings and modalities to ensure that the course schedule is meeting student needs
- Organize and supervise the operation of the division office and academic spaces
- Participate actively and cooperatively with other administrators to support Academic and Career Communities and college/district initiatives
- Support and actively engage in program advisory committees, dual-enrollment initiatives, CSM Coastside programming, and other college priorities
- In collaboration with faculty, identify program needs and encourage the development of curriculum; support a variety of methods and modalities of instruction, including culturally relevant curriculum and pedagogy, Zero-Textbook-Cost (ZTC) and Open Educational Resources (OER) adoptions, computer-assisted instruction, and distance learning
- In collaboration with appropriate college staff and faculty, ensure course and program articulations are kept current and that regular curriculum updates are conducted through the college processes
- Develop and administer the division budget and oversee grant budgets
- With faculty and staff, and in collaboration with other instructional administrators, coordinate the preparation of division class schedules, catalogs, brochures, and other printed materials; including updating the website program information
- Facilitate grant applications for the division, manage new and existing grants, guide assessment activities, and ensure compliance and reporting timelines are met
- Serve as a member of the Instructional Administrators Council
- Work with students, faculty, and staff to constructively resolve problems and conflicts
- Serve as liaison with other college divisions, district teams, advisory committees, student groups, and appropriate off-campus groups
- Serve as an active member of the college administrative team to address college-wide concerns, and contribute to strategic planning, including facilities restructuring and development; serve on college and district committees, as assigned
- Engage in the advancement of the college’s anti-racist work and support efforts to embed that work throughout all college activities
- Implement district rules and regulations, California Education Code, Title 5, and collective bargaining agreements as required
- Collaborate with deans and vice presidents in support of continued integration of student and instructional services to strengthen the delivery of academic programs and services
- Organize and lead the annual division planning and budgeting process in alignment with college goals; provide leadership for departmental program reviews and student learning outcomes assessment; support the collective preparatory work of accreditation
- Provide leadership in staff and faculty professional development, including division meetings and retreats
- Serve as key emergency prevention, preparedness, and response personnel as assigned
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President
Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a Master’s or above from an accredited institution OR the equivalent
- One year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrative assignment
- Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Successful teaching experience in an accredited institution of higher education
- Evidence of ability to provide leadership for all aspects of the division
- Evidence of involvement, initiative, and leadership in instructional activities
- Ability to develop, organize, and coordinate diverse instructional programs to achieve college and division goals
- Ability to elicit and bring focus to recommendations from division faculty and staff, and ability to effectively represent the division and its goals at college and district levels
- Ability to facilitate the development and administration of faculty and staff hiring, curriculum, budget, staff development, and performance evaluations
- Ability to manage the division office and other support services to assist faculty, staff, and students
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with district and college administrators, faculty, staff, students, and the public
- Awareness of and commitment to the goals of shared governance
- Evidence of organizational skills that enable the performance of duties in a timely fashion with attention to detail
- Familiarity with and willingness to use or encourage the use of computer-based technology for the management of the division and instructional purposes
- Experience in or willingness to support, develop, implement, and assess outcomes of programs that lead to the success of all students, including underrepresented groups in math, science, and engineering
- Experience in articulating curriculum and programs with university and high school faculty
- Successful experience in grant writing and management
- Demonstrated ability to form and maintain community and industry partnerships
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administration to plan and implement facilities modifications
- Commitment to programs that encourage pre-collegiate students to pursue education in science, mathematics, and technology
Physical Requirements
This classification requires sitting for extended periods of time, pushing and pulling, and visual acuity. The ability to type, use a phone, stand intermittently, walk, bend and stoop, occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects of light to moderate weight, and work at a computer, including sitting and viewing a monitor for various lengths of time, repetitive use of a keyboard, mouse or other control devices, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a keyboard, ability to communicate and provide information to others; ability to operate a motor vehicle and drive to off-campus locations to perform the essential functions.
Benefits
Benefits include paid holidays, vacation and sick leave. The District pays all or a portion of monthly medical plan premiums (depending on the coverage) and pays all of the monthly dental and vision plan premiums for employees and eligible dependents. Additional paid benefits include life insurance, salary continuance insurance, and an Employee Assistance Program. Academic employees participate in the State Teachers’ Retirement System, a defined-benefit retirement plan through the State of California. Annual Security Report
