Position Description

DEFINITION:

Communication Instructors must have broad competence in the area of Communications and be able to provide CFCC students with classroom and/or online instruction to college students through lecture, handouts, and various forms of media, respond to questions, and to access students though testing, papers or other standard forms of academic assessment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:


  • Receives direct supervision and/or technical direction from the Department Chair.
  • Exercises no supervision

 

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)



ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTION STATEMENTS:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential functions:


  • Provide classroom and/or online instruction to students
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom and/or online activities; develop, and prepare supplemental materials to enhance course readings and lessons
    • online course may not use more than ? third party platform content
  • Develop and prepare appropriate methods of assessment (tests, papers, etc.) to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores
    • online course may not use more than ? third party platform content
  • Ensure that all instruction given to students, including lectures, tests, demonstrations, online exercises, and service projects are consistent with disciplinary and Departmental standards
  • Act as an academic advisor and counselor to students; provide tutoring to students outside of the classroom as needed
  • Participate in curriculum development and evaluation
  • Attend faculty meetings as required
  • Maintain timely and accurate records of student attendance and performance using the College’s online systems
  • Maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements
  • Stay abreast of new developments and changes in the academic field
  • Participate in staff/faculty development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs on and/or off campus as appropriate
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area, Department, and the College
  • Participate on college committees and in other institutional activities and programs
Be willing to accept classroom assignments on any of CFCC’s campus locations: Downtown, North campus, Burgaw campus, Surf City Campus, or other satellite campus locations.

JOther Important Functions:
  • Fill in for other instructors as needed
  • Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons and revise and improve lesson format when necessary
  • Evaluate various text books and select books to be used for future classes
  • Assist in the recruitment of students from the community and area high schools
  • Oversee and participate in the field studies and assignment; travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate
  • Participate in a variety of student related administrative activities including reviewing admission requirements, progress, and qualifications for graduation
  • Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous materials, and hazardous wastes
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • This is a 30-hour per week ON CAMPUS commitment. Classes run M/W/F and T/TH.

 

Qualifications


Knowledge of:


  • Classroom and online instructional techniques and procedures
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the Communications studies
  • Principles and techniques involved in development and administration of appropriate assessments in Communication courses
  • Current trends in Communications studies
  • Workplace Safety
  • Principles and procedures of academic record keeping
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations, including Right to Know regulations
  • Courses primarily taught are: COM 120: Interpersonal Communications and COM 231: Public Speaking

Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations

  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
    • Making observations
    • Reading and writing
    • Communicating with others
    • Operating assigned equipment and/or software
    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously

  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
    • Standing or sitting for extended periods of time
    • Operating assigned equipment and/or software
    • Preparing and presenting instructional material
    • Bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 50 pounds

  • Maintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of:
    • Making sound decisions
    • Responding to questions
    • Demonstrating intellectual capabilities

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Minimum Education/Training:
  • This position requires a Master’s degree earned from a regionally accredited college or university with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Communication courses.

Minimum Experience:
  • There is a preference that an applicant have prior teaching experience as a Communication Instructor on the college level.

  • Knowledge of and ability to teach one or more of the Communication courses offered in the Humanities Department (Interpersonal Communication, Introduction to Intercultural Communication, Public Speaking, and Introduction to Mass Communication)
 
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:
  • Prior experience in teaching at post-secondary level is preferred

  • Knowledge of and ability to teach one or more of the Communication courses offered in the Humanities Department

  • Applicant must have familiarity with Blackboard online learning software. *Note: CFCC is now using Blackboard Ultra.
