2025 Internship – Mechanical/Software Engineer – Shipboard Systems

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Are you interested in solving critical challenges for the United States Navy and Air Force?

Do you love the idea of working with large, complex mechanical systems and their associated software? Does the challenge of processing and analyzing real-world data from U.S. submarines excite you? Would you love to create and validate physics-based simulations of thermofluids problems?

If you are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar major, and want to work in an exciting and collaborative environment, we’d love to have you join our team!

We are seeking an intern ready to embrace challenges associated with simulating complex real-world system behavior in MATLAB/Simulink. The ideal candidate will also have interest and experience in fluid dynamics analysis, whether in the laboratory or through coursework. Experience with writing MATLAB code and performing simulations is helpful, but you will also be learning and developing new skills in this role.

A willingness to learn and embrace change is essential!

As a member of our team...

  • Your primary responsibility will be to perform physics-based modeling in MATLAB/Simulink and similar tools. We will provide existing code for you to learn, review, and improve upon.
  • You will implement coding best-practices specific to Simulink environments, using guidelines provided by the team and alongside an experienced mentor.
  • You will develop post-processing utilities in MATLAB to plot the results of your physics-based simulation against real-world data to validate the accuracy and completeness of the simulation.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Are pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Have a passion for Fluid Dynamics as demonstrated in either a laboratory setting or through coursework, and have some experience coding in MATLAB.
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you…

  • Have significant experience in MATLAB/Simulink through coursework or a prior internship.
  • Have experience developing thermofluid simulations of complex systems, and/or experience with developing data analysis and visualization scripts.
