Job Summary
The Comparative Literature department is looking to hire 1 GSI, at a 0.5 appointment, for ?Translating World Literatures?, topic ?Translation and Migration?.
Course Description
Translation comes from an ancient Latin word "transferre" and means to "carry across." Historically, it has been used to describe the movement of both words and human bodies (and body parts) across borders. But in a modern world beset by mass migrations and forced displacements, what precisely are the roles, ethics, and aims of translation today? How can translation facilitate and empower voices and stories of migration without co-opting them? How to protect and honor the labor of translators without reproducing the structures of individualized authorship that have traditionally excluded and/or marginalized them?
In this seminar, we will survey several modes of translation (literary, ethnographic interviews, film subtitling, open-source news, etc.) across several sites of contemporary migration and displacement: U.S.-Mexico, the Mediterranean, the Korean DMZ, and Mainland China. We will also sample several key translation theories to build a working knowledge of fundamental terminologies, methods, and debates within the field of translation studies and integrate them into (or test them against) our own translation practices.
