If so, we are looking for you to join our team and lead our chemical management programs.
You will work alongside highly skilled, dedicated Environmental Health and Safety professionals who share a common goal of ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for our employees. As part of the EHS team, you will collaborate with APL researchers to enhance our chemical lab safety programs. You will develop creative solutions for mitigating risks and ensuring regulatory compliance across all chemical-related research and chemical use.
As the Industrial Hygiene – Chemical Manager you will:
- Conduct Chemical Risk Assessments to identify potential chemical hazards associated with acquisition, storage, use, and disposal and develop strategies to mitigate risks.
- Manage Hazardous Waste Programs to coordinate the proper disposal of hazardous waste, ensure compliance with environmental regulations and best practices, and develop and implement waste management plans to minimize environmental impact.
- Develop, Implement, and Evaluate safety policies and procedures to align with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Conduct Lab Audits and Inspections to ensure a safe work environment, verify compliance, and identify areas for improvement.
- Provide Training and Education to staff on chemical hazards, safe handling practices, and emergency response procedures.
- Complete Incident Investigations for accidents, incidents, and near miss events involving chemical exposure or spills and develop recommend corrective actions.
- Collaborate closely with Lab staff to integrate chemical safety culture into daily operations.
- Maintain Proficiency in regulations, standards, guidelines and trends in chemical safety to anticipate and evaluate their impact on related research programs.
- Prepare reports, presentations, briefings, and corrective action plans to be delivered to all levels of staff.
- Provide Secondary Support for other EHS programmatic needs.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Health and Safety, or a closely related field.
- Have 3+ years of experience in a professional EHS role within an industry organization.
- Demonstrate an understanding of chemical reactions and properties.
- Exhibit effective written and verbal communication skills, including experience with group presentations and training.
- Understand relevant federal and state laws and regulations regarding environmental health and safety, including regulated waste.
- Thrive in a collaborative team environment, with clear communication and a positive outlook.
- Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

- Have managed chemical programs in a laboratory research environment.
- Have experience leading a regulated waste program.
- Have completed RCRA and DOT Hazardous Materials Training.
- Maintain a relevant professional certification (e.g., CIH, CHMM, CSP).
- Actively participate in professional associations, like AIHA, AHMP, ASSP.
- Hold an active Secret security clearance.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. $90,000 Annually
Maximum Rate
$220,000 Annually
