Job Description

OVERVIEW OF CCA  

The Community College of Aurora serves our diverse community by providing high-quality instruction and support services to prepare students for transfer and employment. More than 20 different languages and 60 countries are represented at CCA. In addition to traditional degree and certificate programs, CCA offers non-credit professional development courses, customized training, and economic and workforce development resources to employer partners and individual professionals seeking to enhance the capacity and productivity of their workforce or individual knowledge and skills. POSITION SUMMARY
As part of the Center for Adult Education, this position will provide non-credit adult English-as-a-Second-Language instruction to students in CCA’s Community ESL (CESL) program who are interested in improving their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar proficiencies. Instructors will teach students who are beginners to high-intermediate/advanced levels. This position will require providing instruction in person with a possibility of occasional remote instruction. Instructors may teach in the mornings, evenings, or on Saturday. Saturday availability preferred.         

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 
Instructional:

  • Prepare lessons and design course materials for a diverse group of adult English language learners
  • Develop homework assignments and projects and provide feedback to students 
  • Align materials and objectives with students’ goals
  • Create an inclusive, welcoming classroom environment 
  • Assess student progress regularly and adjust course materials to meet students’ needs 
  • Create opportunities for active student-student interaction and language practice 
  • Design and use Open Educational Resources (OER) that align with standardized course objectives and the program’s transition to OER
  • Integrate digital literacy skills instruction regularly into instruction
  • Integrate career-based (workforce) regularly into instruction 
  • Develop and implement curricula that ties together the program’s current goals of transitioning to OER, active student engagement, and integration of digital literacy skills and career-based (workforce) instruction
  • Prepare syllabus for each course in line with course objectives 
  • Contact students with absences to identify obstacles and refer for additional support
  • Support students in accessing available campus support services 
  
Administrative:
  • Maintain records of student attendance 
  • Monitor student progress and recommend level changes as appropriate
  • Maintain communication with program staff and students
  • Support new student registration 
  • Work collaboratively with other CESL instructors and staff to achieve program goals
  • Exercise punctuality in communication and follow program deadlines, processes, and procedures 
 
Professional Development: 
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development offerings 
  • Engage in 12-15 hours of approved professional development annually
  • Keep current with best practices in language instruction and acquisition 
 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • At least 1 year of experience teaching Adult ESL
  • Ability to work independently and deliver lessons based on best practices and current research in language instruction and acquisition to adult ELLs of all levels
  • Commitment to diversity and Inclusive Excellence
  • Demonstrate adaptability, flexibility, and an open mind in times of change 
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience teaching and working with adult immigrant and refugee populations
  • MA in education or TESOL, or TESOL Certification (120 hours +)
  • Experience learning a second language and living in a diverse community 
  • Experience using Google Drive (Docs and Sheets), Google Classroom, Zoom, and Word
  • Familiarity with WIOA and CCRS
  • Prior experience in Adult Education and/or workforce settings
  • Good organizational skills and a positive attitude

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Salary: The starting hourly rate for this position is $33.55.
