Job Summary:
The Assistant Coach- Tennis Coach/Dorm Manager is a live-in position and is responsible for assisting the Head Coach-Tennis with various aspects of the program, including preseason, practice, games, scouting, and recruiting student-athletes. In addition, this position oversees the students in the Dormitory and assists in developing and implementing all residential and community activities within that dorm building. The Assistant Coach-Tennis/Dorm Manager is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by Cowley College, Jayhawk Athletic Conference, and the NJCAA.
Essential Functions:
Assistant Tennis Coach
- Teach fundamentals, techniques, etc., as directed by the Head Coach.
- Assume responsibility of assisting the head Coach, under his/her supervision, in performing assigned responsibilities.
- Be familiar with and follow the policies of the NJCAA and the KJCCC.
- Attend team activities, as necessary.
- Attend coaches’ meetings and clinics.
- Attend and take part in the in-service training provided by the Head Coaches.
- Remain at team activities until all participants have left facilities or designate a responsible person to remain.
- Teach sportsmanship and set an example of good moral and physical behavior.
- Assist in all aspects of a competitive tennis program, including; equipment management, recruiting, budget control, scheduling, academic supervision, planning, etc.
- Encourage athletes to participate in all programs of the student’s choice.
- Work continually with the Athletic Director and other coaches to upgrade the total athletic program.
- Be loyal to the Tennis Head Coach and the tennis program.
- Attend all contests in the tennis program.
- Maintain courteous, professional, and effective working relationships with employees, vendors, and/or any other representatives of external organizations.
- Comply with all College policies and procedures
- Assist the Tennis Head Coach by performing other duties as assigned.
Dorm Manager
- Maintain Dorm Manager office hours set by supervisor.
- Act as a positive role model and will work directly with dormitory students in the development and enforcement of rules to ensure proper student conduct and care of facilities.
- Assist in the training and mentoring of new Resident Assistants (RA). Assist with the RA training program each semester.
- Develop a semester dorm activity schedule and coordinate communication of events with Resident Assistants, Dorm Managers, the Director of Student Life, and the Director of Housing.
- Coordinate Christmas party.
- 1-2 larger events per semester (specific to Dormitory).
- Create and submit an activities schedule for a semester at least 2 weeks before the start of the semester.
- Manage budget for activities.
- Communicate and Market each activity throughout campus.
- Supervise, direct, develop, mentor, select, train, and evaluate 2-3 Resident Assistants, connecting student growth and development to specific learning outcomes.
- Schedule weekly meetings with RA, providing feedback to the Director of Housing.
- Manage all room changes. Check-in/out students during move-in/move-out days and throughout the semester. Inspect for damage during check-out.
- Maintain Rooming Roster with 100% accuracy.
- Maintain all housing reports.
- Maintain confidentiality on all records, reports, and incidents investigated by the housing department, as well as any other record and/or information accessible to the housing department.
- Conduct regular mandatory building meetings throughout the academic year
- Conduct regular inspections for the appearance, operation, safety, and security of the dormitories and report all issues to the Director of Housing.
- Must conduct inspections at least twice a semester.
- Follow-up 24 hours after a concern is found.
- Assist with all safety drills, and room and drug inspections.
- Assist with dorm lock-outs
- Attend weekly manager meetings.
- On-call rotation for campus dormitories.
- Follow up on all student concerns.
- Identify and refer students to college services, including but not limited to, Student Life, Counselor, Director of Health Services, and Tutoring.
- Dorm Student package processing and distribution. Process and deliver student mail to the dormitory.
- Maintain courteous, professional, and effective working relationships with employees, vendors, and/or any other representatives of external organizations.
- Comply with all College policies and procedures
- Assist the Director of Housing by performing other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Extensive knowledge of tennis.
- Ability to recruit, coach, and teach highly talented student-athletes.
- Ability to understand and adhere to all policies, rules, and regulations of the College, Jayhawk Athletic Conference, and NJCAA.
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to teamwork
- A proven record of following directives and being responsible for tasks that have been assigned.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, as needed.
- Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives, and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
- Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions, and other outcomes.
- Knowledge of management methods and ability to provide administrative guidance within the area of responsibility and provide direct training and supervision, as needed.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting and participating in the overall athletic program, student activities, and College events.
- Ability to teach sportsmanship and set an example of good moral and physical behavior.
- Ability to market and promote Cowley College Tennis.
- Ability to work and maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
- Excellent communication skills- orally, by phone, in person, and writing.
- Excellent human relations skills. Ability to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and diverse populations. A positive attitude toward students and understanding of their social and personal development needs.
- Comprehensive understanding of college housing and its interrelationship with student satisfaction and student learning.
- Must have the ability to react quickly in emergencies.
- Must have the ability to remain calm in tense situations and effectively deal with confrontational situations.
- Understanding of and commitment to quality improvement.
- Must possess a positive attitude towards students and understand their social and personal development needs.
Required Education Background:
- Bachelor’s Degree, preferred
- CPR and First Aide Certification
Required Experience:
- High school, college, or equivalent level coaching.
- Prevention and proper care of athletic injuries.
- Current, valid Driver License. A Commercial Driver's License is preferred.
- Must be insurable on Cowley College vehicle insurance policy.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit and stand for extended periods; ability to move freely around the campus and other locations; ability to lift up to 50 pounds; ability to bend, stoop, reach, and grasp as required to perform responsibilities; ability to drive motor vehicle.
Work Environment:
Work performed in sports facilities and outdoors.
