Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

MLAW’s Law and Society Minor is an academic minor in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) for upper level students enrolled in any major at UMCP. More information is available at http://mlaw.umd.edu.

In fall 2024, MLAW will enroll its tenth cohort of 75 students in each program. The students in the MLAW Program will be exploring the relationship between justice, law and society through a series of required and elective courses and experiential activities.

This GA position typically serves as the point person for one 3 credit course per semester that may include discussion sections. The GA may also be assigned to two courses per semester without discussion sections. The courses will be taught by faculty from BSOS and the Carey School of Law for MLAW students. Responsibilities also include providing administrative assistance and event support to MLAW Programs.

Duties: The GA will be expected to:
  • Effectively lead discussion sections in law and society from a sociological and legal perspective
  • Grade exams and assignments
  • Record and maintain accurate student participation records
  • Provide program and curricular support
  • Assist with administrative work as needed
  • Maintain effective communication with staff and students
  • Attend and provide event support
  • Provide classroom (face to face and virtually) logistic support
  • Other duties as assigned

Reporting: The GA reports to the Associate Director of the L&S Minor, Brandee Pettus.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Must be currently enrolled in a UMCP graduate program.

Experience:
  • Must have experience or education in law, ethics, regulations, law and society, policy, politics, or government.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to lead class discussion.

Additional Information:

This position is a 12 month graduate assistant position coinciding with the University’s academic calendar. https://phr-app6.umd.edu/holidays/ This is a one year appointment, beginning 7/1/24, with possibility for renewal.

Remuneration:
Remuneration will follow the standard rate for graduate students employees in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences plus tuition (up to 10 credits each Fall and Spring semester).

Time Requirement: Twenty hours (approximate average) per week, including at least 6-office hours/week. Occasional evenings and weekend work (within those 20 hours) may be required for field trips and special events.
