Assistant Director, Disability Outreach

We are seeking an Assistant Director, Disability Outreach who will provide strategic oversight and manages a team that designs, delivers, and evaluates programmatic resources and initiatives focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) as aligned with the university and divisional strategic plans. This individual will also serve as a strategic partner with various areas (e.g., Student Affairs, Integrated Learning & Life Design, Student Disability Services, and Office of Institutional Equity) to plan and implement innovative strategies that cultivate inclusive excellence and belonging for students with disabilities at Hopkins focused on education, retention, and success. The Assistant Director for Disability Outreach will report to the Deputy Director for the Center for Diversity and Inclusion with a secondary reporting line to the Director of Disability, Culture, and Inclusion in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. This individual will lead the Disabled Student Community Outreach (DiSCO) initiative and will supervise one graduate assistant and two undergraduate interns.

Disabled Student Community Outreach (DiSCO) is a student-led initiative which aims to create a unified sense of community for all students who are disabled across Johns Hopkins. DiSCO supports students who are disabled through three pillars: 1) raise awareness of and advocate for the disabled student experience; 2) cultivate dialogue by campus and student engagement; 3) increase visibility among students who are disabled and allied organizations.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

 

Planning & Execution (30%)

  • Under the direction of the Deputy Director and Director of Disability, Culture, and Inclusion design, manage, and evaluate the success of the Disabled Student Community Outreach (DiSCO) events and initiatives.
  • Provide advanced strategic consultation and oversight to the university’s programs and initiatives to support students with disabilities.
  • Provide regular updates to the Deputy Director and Director of Disability, Culture, and Inclusion with analyses of student progress, feedback, and concerns.
  • Provide budget leadership for the programmatic cost center.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and manage a team of undergraduate and graduate student staff.
  • Mentor and meet with students to assess their needs and refer them to applicable services.
  • Facilitate timely referrals with appropriate campus resources.
  • Support presentations at development trainings, retreats, and events as requested by student organizations, Center for Diversity & Inclusion, Student Affairs, Student Health & Wellbeing, Admissions & Financial Aid, and other offices and academic departments.

 

Collaborative Partnerships (20%)

  • Build partnerships and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders across campus.
  • Interface regularly with partners focused on developing an alignment of inclusive practices for students with disabilities at Hopkins.
  • Collaborate with other entities on campus that provide student facing efforts around community, belonging, and retention programs.
  • Serve on internal and external committees, as needed.

 

Student Support & Advising (20%)

  • Advise and support the Homewood student organization, Advocates for Disability Awareness (ADA) as well as other allied organizations across Hopkins including the DiSCO council.
  • Provide guidance and counsel to student organizations to execute impactful programming which supports student retention, belonging, and academic success.
  • Communicate student needs and use student feedback to inform departmental work.

 

Communications (15%)

  • Work with the Director for Strategic Communications to develop social media strategy to increase awareness of resources and communicate the impact of events, programs, and initiatives.
  • Supervise student staff to implement social media strategy.
  • In consultation with the Director of Strategic Communications update department communication channels including social media, website, and email as needed.
  • Supervise content for monthly newsletters and other regular communications.

 

Institutional Support (15%)

  • Serve on university-wide work groups, task forces, and advisory councils, as needed.
  • Serve as a resource for campus administrators, faculty and staff regarding policy development, subject-area expertise and support in matters relating to pluralism, race, class, gender, disability justice, and identity.
  • Provide consultative advice to Deputy Director and Director for Disability, Culture, and Inclusion on matters pertaining to students, as needed.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

  • Participation on divisional or institutional committees and/or projects related to disability, culture, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to students, faculty, staff, and the university community.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, student-oriented, and data driven environment.
  • Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience leading key initiatives for an office.
  • Experience collaborating across departments and divisions.
  • Ability to develop and implement short and long-range plans to meet program needs.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office, Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledgeable on creating accessible digital documents and content (e.g., event flyers, social media posts, presentations, etc.).


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in education, higher education, student personnel, disability studies, vocational rehabilitation or relevant field.
  • Three years of experience, preferably in disability services in a post-secondary setting.
  • Additional experience may be substituted for required education as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: Min $55,200 - Max $96,600 Annually ($67,970 budgeted; Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
